Gingivitis is an extremely common oral health condition, with millions of American adults suffering from some form of gingivitis. However, gingivitis is also highly preventable and treatable. Here are our top tips at West Georgia Family Dentistry about how to keep your gums healthy and free from disease.

Maintain Your Oral Hygiene

The number one way to prevent gingivitis (and other gum diseases) is to maintain impeccable oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash regularly. Be sure to brush gently around your gum line to remove any plaque or bacteria that may have built up.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Even if you brush and floss, it’s still important to visit your dentist at West Georgia Family Dentistry for regular cleanings and checkups. We will remove any tartar or plaque that has accumulated on your teeth, and we can also keep an eye out for any early signs of gingivitis or other oral health problems. You should visit us for a teeth cleaning and oral exam at least twice a year, or once every six months.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Your diet plays a big role in your oral health, so it’s important to eat plenty of crunchy fruits and vegetables that help clean your teeth as you eat them. Foods high in vitamin C are also great for gum health, so be sure to include plenty of citrus fruits and leafy greens in your diet. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, which can promote tooth decay, and try to limit your intake of coffee and alcohol as well.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do for your oral health, so if you smoke cigarettes or use tobacco products, quitting is the best thing you can do for your gums (and your overall health). Smoking increases your risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer, so it’s important to kick the habit as soon as possible.
