Are you worried about your next dental exam? Many people find that they experience some form of dental anxiety, which can make going to the dentist very difficult. However, it is important to keep in mind that dental exams are crucial for maintaining good oral health. At West Georgia Family Dentistry, we want you to know what happens during a typical dental exam so you’ll be prepared and know exactly what to expect.

Gather Information

The first thing that will happen when you arrive is that you will be asked to fill out a medical history form. This form will ask about any previous dental work, as well as any medical conditions that you may have. It is important to be honest on this form, as it will help us to better understand your oral health needs.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

After your medical history form has been filled out, the next step is to have your teeth cleaned. This process will remove any plaque or tartar that has built up on your teeth over time. Your dentist or dental hygienist will use special instruments to scrape away any deposits, and will polish your teeth to leave them feeling clean and smooth.

Examination of Teeth and Gums

Once your teeth have been cleaned, we will take a closer look to check for any signs of decay or other problems. We will also examine your gums to check for any signs of inflammation or disease like oral cancer. If we find anything that needs further treatment, your dentist will discuss your options with you at this time.

X-Rays

Depending on the results of your examination, your dentist may also want to take some x-rays of your teeth. This will allow us to get a better look at any areas that cannot be seen with the naked eye. X-rays are painless and only take a few minutes to complete.
